GFDA Top 12 3/12/17

Here's the GFDA Top 10 for this week, celebrating great things happening to move Great Falls Forward. Download and use our updated Great Falls Growth Highlights to help make your projects happen.

1) 88,000+ people including Team GFDA met in Anaheim at the Natural Products Expo West. We were on the lookout for companies that use pulse crops in their products. Our goal is to get them to consider manufacturing in North Central Montana. 2) Celebrate Women Entrepreneurs!
Embark FCU and GFDA are pleased to announce registration is open for both Fire It Up! and The Fire WithinFire It Up, a speed networking evening of professional development, is on March 23 at Electric City Coffee; click here to register. The Fire Within, a celebration of outstanding women entrepreneurs, is March 30 at the Meadowlark Country Club; click here to register.

3) Cascade County issued an RFP for land use planning of the Black Eagle smelter site. The site could be a major boost to future recreation options.

4) Modernizing the nation's arsenal of nuclear weapons is the top priority for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Vice Chairman of the JCS General Paul Selva told Congress Wednesday.
 
5) Great Falls Public Schools has moved quickly to put bond funds to work to repair and improve school facilities across the city. Some of the projects out to bid include window replacement at East Middle School, boiler replacement at Sunnyside Elementary and the Great Falls High Fieldhouse, electrical service replacement at Morningside Elementary, fire alarm upgrade at North Middle, elevated sidewalk replacement at CMR, and electrical upgrades at Loy Elementary. A number of major projects are in design and engineering.
 
6) Great Falls area manufacturers will be meeting for our monthly Manufacturers Roundtable on 3/23 at 4 PM at the Mighty Mo. This informal discussion is hosted by GFDA and the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center. GFDA has been asked to moderate the manufacturing session at the International Economic Development Council's Federal Policy Forum in DC in April that will feature federal officials charged with supporting manufacturing growth across America.

7) Check out the great marketing content that the Great Falls Tourism partnership has been producing and using to bring more tourist dollars into our region.

8) The University of Great Falls is holding an Internship & Career Fair on March 22-23. See Invitation Letter and Event Details for more info and to sign your company up.

10) Montana ranks 8th in college affordability according to Student Loan Hero. Students at Montana public colleges pay on average $167/credit.

12) I invested part of this week visiting West Virginia coal country communities to learn about their economic diversification efforts along with the City of Ogden's Director of Economic and Community Development. Ogden invests very aggressively in economic development. Met with the Executive Director of National Coal Heritage Area to see how they have used their national heritage area designation to grow and diversify their economy. Then, I visited with corporate leaders at the headquarters in the midwest of one of our top existing companies to discuss future potential expansion.
